Our work in Uganda
In Uganda, ZOA has offices in Kampala, West Nile (Arua), Acholi (Gulu), and Karamoja (Amudat). ZOA Uganda works both in relief and recovery on the themes of food security & livelihoods, primary/accelerated/vocational education, and conflict management with a special focus on land security.
ZOA Uganda is looking for a Driver based in Arua City
Your challenge
The Driver is a full time driver to support the ZOA team in the delivery of project activities.
Duties will include driving a ZOA vehicle, trip planning and communication with the team , ensuring timely maintenance and fuelling of the vehicle, supporting health & safety and security of ZOA project staff.
Your main tasks and responsibilities
Driving
- To ensure availability of the following car requirements: log sheet, first aid box, spanners, hoes, spade, and jack; these items should not be removed from the car without authorization;
- To ensure that the fuel tank is adequately filled and/or fuel is requested for before undertaking a journey;
- To drive the car carefully and in accordance with ZOA’s Employee Handbook, ZOA’s Security Policy, ZOA’s Code of Conduct for Driving and the national traffic laws;
- To ensure that the car only moves for authorized travel;
- To ensure that the car only carries authorized passengers and goods;
- To assist with the loading and unloading of the vehicle, including the passengers;
- To ensure that the safety belts are correctly used by driver and passengers;
- To ensure that the total vehicle tonnage is respected to avoid overloading and subsequent damage to the vehicle.
- Ensure a safe and secure location for the vehicle overnight, e.g. in partner or DLG office compounds
Maintenance
- To report all mechanical problems to the supervisor immediately; prepare and document necessary repair details on the ZOA Repair/Maintenance Requisition form;
- To daily check the fluids and carry out other checks (engine oil, brake fluid, battery, tyres, insurance) before commencing travel;
- (if applicable) To assist in maintaining, servicing and repairing of all vehicles at the duty station, including motor bikes;
- To ensure the car remains presentable and the exterior and interior clean and tidy.
Administration
- To enter all the details of each journey in the vehicle log sheet;
- To ensure each trip in the log sheet is signed by the ZOA passenger;
- Responsible for the availability of the log sheet and valid insurance of the vehicle; the driver is responsible to report any problems to the supervisor;
- To keep up to date maintenance and service records of the vehicle;
- To ensure that a waiver form is signed when passengers are non ZOA staff;
- Adhere to the travel times outlined in the ZOA Uganda security policy.
Accountability
- Sensitize all stakeholders (beneficiaries, service providers, partners, government and other) on feedback and complaint mechanisms implemented by ZOA Uganda
- Upon receipt of a complaint or feedback, ensure that it is correctly documented following correct reporting procedures
- Understand ZOA’s code of conduct and safeguarding policies, ensure adherence to these policies and that project activities are implemented with a “Do No Harm” approach
Your profile
Identity
Knowledge & experience:
- Valid Uganda driving licence;
- Minimum working experience of 1 year as an employed driver, preferably for an (I)NGO;
- Uganda certificate of Education (UCE) level/Senior Four Level;
- Understanding of logistics and vehicle maintenance/repair;
- Fluent command of English;
- Desirable: experience in working for / driving for an NGO in the regions / districts of the project implementation.
Skills:
- High level defensive driving skills, recently trained;
- Pro-active, instead of reactive, e.g. informs passengers ahead of a trip if there are likely to be challenge or delays, to allow for good planning;
- Flexible conduct;
- Customer-friendly attitude;
- Good communicator.

Special conditions/circumstances
The Driver will sit within ZOA office in Arua. Regular travel to field locations is expected.
