Community Nutrition Mobilisers (CNMs) focuses on engaging and empowering communities to improve nutrition and prevent malnutrition. It involves raising awareness, providing education, and promoting healthy eating habits through participatory activities such as community meetings, cooking demonstrations, and nutrition sessions. The approach connects families to health and food resources while encouraging sustainable behavior change. By working with local stakeholders and health workers, it strengthens community ownership of nutrition initiatives and fosters long-term impact. The ultimate goal is to reduce malnutrition and enhance overall health outcomes through collective action and improved access to nutritious food.
Responsibilities:
Nutrition Screening & Referral
- Conduct regular MUAC screening for children under five to identify and refer cases of acute malnutrition.
- Maintain accurate screening records and submit timely reports to the Nutrition Assistant.
- Refer eligible cases to nearby health facilities or outreach sites using the approved referral pathway.
IYCF & SBCC Support
- Conduct home visits and group sessions to promote Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) practices such as exclusive breastfeeding and appropriate complementary feeding.
- Assist in forming and facilitating Mother-to-Mother Support Groups (MSGs) using standard training materials and job aids.
- Help caregivers adopt nutrition-rich practices during the child’s first 1,000 days.
Food Demonstration & Hygiene Promotion
- Support the planning and facilitation of cooking demonstration sessions, showing caregivers how to prepare diverse, affordable, and nutritious meals.
- Promote handwashing, safe water use, food hygiene, and other basic WASH practices as part of integrated outreach.
Commodity Redemption Support
- Provide support during the redemption of nutrition commodities at vendor shops by:
- Ensuring each participant receives their correct entitlements as per distribution guidelines.
- Monitoring the process to promote dignity, fairness, and respectful treatment of all beneficiaries.
- Reporting any irregularities or concerns to the Nutrition Assistant immediately.
Community Mobilization & Awareness
- Raise awareness about available nutrition services and encourage participation in routine screenings, MSG meetings, and food demonstrations.
- Engage community influencers to reinforce positive nutrition behaviors.
- Help build community trust and ownership of nutrition programming.
Monitoring, Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain basic records of screening outcomes, session attendance, and referral cases.
- Report challenges, feedback, and community insights to the Nutrition Assistant during regular supervision.
- Contribute to stories of change, best practices, or photos, as requested.
Safeguarding & Inclusion
- Ensure that outreach activities are inclusive, particularly for pregnant and lactating women, adolescent mothers, and caregivers with disabilities.
- Uphold safeguarding principles and report any protection concerns promptly to the relevant focal person.
Requirements:
- Minimum of basic literacy (ability to read and write); SSCE or equivalent is a plus.
- Must be a resident and trusted member of the assigned community or ward.
- Prior experience supporting nutrition programs, community outreach, or women’s groups is an advantage.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; fluency in the local language(s) is required.
- Committed to child and maternal health and capable of conducting home visits and group meetings respectfully.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and willing to follow guidance and reporting protocols.
- Committed to treating all participants with dignity and promoting equality and inclusion at all times.
