VSLA and EMAP community volunteers play a vital role in promoting community empowerment and gender equality at the grassroots level. They mobilize community members to form Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), facilitate group meetings, and support training on savings, financial literacy, and small business development. Volunteers mentor groups on leadership and governance while monitoring progress and documenting success stories. In EMAP, they engage men through structured sessions on positive masculinity, non-violence, and gender equality, fostering respectful relationships and reducing GBV risks. By linking communities with resources and promoting inclusion, these volunteers drive sustainable change and social cohesion.
Responsibilities:
VSLA
Community Mobilization & Group Facilitation
- Mobilize community members to form and participate in Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) and income-generating groups.
- Assist in organizing awareness sessions on savings, financial literacy, and small business development.
- Support the formation and functionality of VSLA groups, particularly among women, youth, and vulnerable populations.
- Promote regular meeting attendance, share contributions, and inclusive participation.
Training & Mentorship Support
- Participate in basic VSLA training delivered by the Business/VSLA Officer and help support group members to apply learned practices.
- Assist in distributing and explaining the use of VSLA kits and tools.
- Mentor community groups on leadership, governance, and savings discipline.
- Report any challenges or group conflicts to the supervising officer for technical follow-up.
Monitoring & Record Keeping
- Attend VSLA meetings regularly and support with simple data collection (e.g., share contributions, loan usage, group attendance).
- Submit monthly progress summaries and share community feedback with the Officer.
- Help identify and document success stories or notable changes resulting from VSLA or livelihood support.
EMAP (Engaging Men through Accountable Practice)
Session Facilitation & Mobilization
- Assist the EMAP Assistant in mobilizing and registering male participants for weekly EMAP sessions.
- Support the facilitation of structured EMAP group discussions, helping ensure respectful participation and adherence to the curriculum.
- Help track attendance, take notes, and reinforce key messages around positive masculinity, non-violence, and gender equality.
- Serve as a link between the EMAP team and local community leaders to promote male engagement in GBV prevention.
Community Awareness & Inclusion
- Promote gender-transformative messaging through informal interactions and community awareness events.
- Encourage male champions and positive role models in the community to advocate for respectful relationships and women's rights.
- Identify and refer concerns or protection risks to the EMAP Assistant or relevant protection staff.
Requirements:
- Minimum of a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE); additional training in business, social work, or peacebuilding is an advantage.
- Resides in and is well known in the assigned community.
- Prior involvement in community groups (e.g., VSLA, youth associations, or peace committees) is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated interest in gender equality, financial inclusion, or community development.
- Ability to communicate effectively in the local language; basic English proficiency is an asset.
- Comfortable speaking in group settings and supporting community education activities.
- Responsible, respectful, and willing to uphold safeguarding and confidentiality principles.
- Willing to commit time weekly to support both VSLA and EMAP activities as needed.
